Hot Mess To ENDLESS Success
Dear Darling,
This morning I was listening to a podcast I’d heard in the past. I thought it beneficial to refresh my memory on the topic. This time around, I realized I was listening with a whole new perspective because I’d actually begun to implement the ideas surrounding the podcast — How to Create Habits That Create Happiness With Gretchen Rubin.
If your not familiar with Gretchen Rubin, you should be! She’s the author of Better Than Before, a book that discusses 4 personality types (Upholder, Questioner, Rebel, and Oblijer) to help you decipher how to best create habits that produce happiness in your life.

The point is, while listening to this podcast, I realized that I had begun to do life around what works for me. I often get caught up in what others tell me to do (as a good Obliger would) but I couldn’t help havingsome Questioner traits coming up as I questioned what some coaches in the industry suggested!
I kept thinking to myself, “I’m just not like you.” Coaches can be quick to tell you what to do but there are certain things you have to figure out for yourself.
Everything I share with you, take it with a grain of salt because what’s right for me may not always work for you. I’m just here to encourage you on your entrepreneurial journey!
I share all this because I’ve been trying to find the best monthly/weekly/morning ritual for me. Something to help me create a better work and play balance. I was in desperate need of creating a plan that’s help me accomplish all my work but also caters to the side of me that loves freedom and spontaneity. That version of me loves sleeping in and leaving everything at the drop of a hat to do any fun activity that come up! Whether that’s stepping out for a scrumptious lunch with my husband or meeting a girl friend in town for a cuppa. But there’s also the CEO side to me that creeps up and guilt trips me into thinking I haven’t done enough work or I won’t sign up new clients because I enjoyed a walk into town instead of sending out an email to my list
If you’re like me, you’re probably wondering…how do you balance both sides? I’m here to help you with that…
1. Set A Clear Vision
Star by creating a vision for you future. I love this quote from Paul Arden’s book It’s Not How Good You Are, It’s How Good You Want To Be…
“Your vision of where or who you want to be is the greatest asset you have. Without having a goal it’s difficult to score.”
You can’t go somewhere you you don’t know how to get to. If you don’t have a clear and specific vision you’ll stay stuck where you are now. Your vision for your future will be the map that leads you where you want to go.
2. Break Down You Goals
Now that you have a bigger vision, create goals for the next 90 days. They can be broken down into month goals. Anything from how many clients you want, financial goals, content creation goals, email marketing goals, listen building goals, etc..
3. Break Down Your Goals Even More
You’ve got to break it down even further. Once you have your monthly goals mapped out, you need to break them down into weekly and daily goals so you can stay on track for success. I personally have an Excel/Numbers sheet that track all of this so I can map things out from beginning to end. Actually having weekly/daily goals helps me accomplish my bigger and overall vision for my life and business.
4. Each Day Doesn’t Have To Be The Same
Along the way, there was one thing that kept bugging me -- I wanted the freedom to do work on my terms. My coach insisted I create more discipline in my life and she was right. I’m a big believer that discipline produces freedom but I wanted to create discipline in a way that worked for me, not my coach. I wasn’t at the stage of life that she was in and I knew her schedule just wasn’t going to work for me but I kept feeling guilty that I wasn’t doing things like everyone else around me.
I had to come to terms with the fact that I wanted to do things differently and that meant going against my Obliger personality and ignoring what other were telling me to do (pretty sure I have alittle bit of a Questioner in me). I didn’t have to do things like everyone around me to be successful.
Beth, find what works for you. Seriously.
What does this look like for me? I’ve chosen to stay up and wake up late a few times during the week so I can feed the side of me that craves freedom. I wake up early the rest of the week to keep the CEO side of me at peace. It’s working!
Don’t give into the lie that there is only one way, you have to figure out what will work for you personally.
5. Force Yourself to Focus
It’s not easy sticking to a plan, be aware that sometimes tasks will need adjusting on your calendar. There are moments when I struggle with doing scheduled task because I’m just not in the mood. Truth be told, I didn’t feel like writing this email but I forced myself to focus and just did it. Once I started writing I really got into the topic I was sharing with you.
So push yourself, give a task a go and if you’re still not feeling it after 10 or 15 minutes than switch it around for something else in your schedule and accomplish today’s task tomorrow!
Darling Beth, everyone is different and will have their own way of planning for success. If you don’t resonate to the way I do things than listen to Gretchen Rubin’s podcast to help you figure out the root of how you should be accomplishing tasks so that you can create a happier and more successful you!
